Greetings

Post  Ferios on Sun Sep 27, 2009 11:25 pm

Saw you in the chatbox, Sono, but it looks like I didn't make it in in time. About thirty seconds after you dropped due to inactivity, in fact. Alas. In any case, welcome.

Seems like the other people I mentioned won't be coming for a bit. Aliosis has already started drumming out a few character ideas for himself, though, so chances are he'll pop up when he's done with his current project or when he's done watching Fate/stay. Turns out he's never seen it before, so I all but forced it down his throat. Smile

More Greetings

Post  Ferios on Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:04 am

And greetings to you too, Eri! That makes a probable four players so far. Hopefully we can gather a few more through the few banners I put up, but probably not for a while. Four people should be enough to get started, though, even if it's not technically enough for a full Holy Grail War.

Hi there! I noticed your post and decided to join this forum for the action. I'm a writer of moderate abilities - though I'll make no grammatical errors if I so choose - and I've taken AP English for a year. Plus, I'm a Fate/Stay Night fan. Hopefully that provides enough credentials for me to join in, no? =)

Actually, I've been waiting for this sort of thing to pop up for quite a while now. The other RPs on the net were rather - shall we say - diverse in writing quality, so I was pretty surprised by the consistent level of narrative and dedication all the members have displayed on this site. I've already prepared my custom master and servant from previous RPs - may I please participate and claim the Archer class? Thanks!

Yo!

Post  Ferios on Mon Oct 12, 2009 3:07 pm

Welcome! I'm surprised there are still people joining. I figured the four of us would be all we'd get. All you really needed was to be a Fate fan, but needless to say that being an experienced writer certainly helps. You most certainly may participate. Razz

Servants are first-come-first-serve at the moment. Aliosis was initially planning on playing Archer, but last I talked to him he seemed interested in Saber. So I'm not really sure what his plans are. But to my knowledge, he hasn't created a character yet and I can't really 'save him a seat' without knowing where he wants to sit. Therefore, as soon as you post a Servant topic in the Dojo for the class, it's yours.

I figured you're creative enough to adapt to any class anyway, Alio-chan. Smile

Re: Greetings

Post  Akeii on Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:33 pm

Are there any spell or equipment/weapon lists I have to come up with? Most of the other RPs I knew implemented some degree of restrictions on what you could use so that there's evidence they were prepared ahead of time instead of being made right on the spot. Right now I only see Noble Phantasms and skills... can I list the equipment and weapons my characters own and the spells they can use?

Of course, to follow your "no-godmodding" rule the admin usually has to approve the listed equipment/spells in question so that the RP remains balanced. So, I was wondering how rigid this specific RP is regarding these preparations. This applies mostly to classes such as Caster (giving evidence that spells and their effects were prepared ahead of time) but also to any characters with important innate/achievable skills, spells, or artifacts that had specific effects.

Also, is the RP turn-based? One method I found interesting was a "Night" and "Day" cycle when "Day" constituted unlimited, but nonviolent, opportunities for the characters to interact for fun until the admin changed the time to "Night," where the focus changes to real competition. During the night the RP would become turn-based for a set amount of turns: it only allowed one a single action for each character per turn, and the admin would update the status of all the characters at once to avoid confusion or unfair tactical advantages. Of course, there was some flexibility to the chronology and amount of turns per night, especially during combat.

Since you have a map, some additional features might allow an even more interactive RP. For example, masters could have their headquarters stationed in a specific part of the city, and you could implement a retreat system in which they could recover best at home. Also, combining this with a turn-based system could allow you a measure of time taken for characters to travel from one place to another, allowing you to create strategies, tactics, etc.

Anyways, these were just some ideas that I thought you might find useful. Thanks for letting me in, and I hope that these systems were at least of some help to you! =)

Re: Greetings

Post  Ferios on Mon Oct 12, 2009 6:16 pm

To be honest, I'm still thinking things like that through. For now, you could say that this is a trial run. I want to see how things play out for a few weeks without any major restrictions. I am considering a lot of them, however. Which classes should have access to which skills, how many skills or phantasms each class gets, things of that nature. What I'm lacking in is balancing ideas for Masters, but if/when I make spell lists a requirement, that will probably be easy enough.

I was also thinking that half of the fun in Fate is trying to guess who every Servant is supposed to be. As the admin, I'm probably going to have to sacrifice this when I start to restrict things (first to keep track of which Heroic Spirits would already be in use, and second to gauge whether or not that particular spirit would have certain powers), but I'm selfish and don't really want to ruin my own fun just yet. =p However, I promise that once everyone finishes creating their Servants and posts a page for them, I'll get Spirit names and look through them all more critically for balancing purposes.

To that end, don't worry about rigidity in balancing too much for right now. If I see something that seems too powerful, I'll point it out for reconsideration, probably in private messages. If you want to list spells and weapons a character commonly uses, feel free, but it's not a requirement just yet. However, be vague about names or descriptions as is necessary to hide the identity of your Servant until they're revealed in roleplaying. The only required listings are stat rankings and skills for Servants and censored Noble Phantasms (again, until they're used). Also, there isn't any turn-based system in place just yet. I do rather like the one you suggested, however, so I might put it to use in the future.

Thanks for the clarifications, Ferios. I contacted another F/SN fan I happen to know from the net. He's pretty good at writing - hopefully he'll choose to join in! pirat

Edit: By the way, you have to tell me how you two got these awesome signatures. xD

Eri made them. I touched mine up a little bit, but he's way better at image editing than I am. He might do one for you, too, if you ask nicely. Very Happy

And thanks for the recruitment attempt. I'm not looking to make the place huge, but we do need at least seven Servants for a war, after all.

Post  Cruithne on Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:10 am

Heya. I got a PM on my old forum from Akeii about this place. It's still kind of small, but well, it's Fate related, so I guess my curiosity was piqued.

I guess I would be on the experienced side of roleplaying, but I've been out of practice now for a great number of months. I'm not sure if this is the place to get me back going, but I got the invite so I took a look around.

You guys seem to play semi-canon, is that intended?

Previous Fate stuff I've been in:

Blood of the Holy Grail [IC]
Blood of the Holy Grail [OOC]
Fate/Stay Night [Casual]

Cannibals

Post  Ferios on Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:10 am

Welcome, Cruithne. For the moment, we're canon to the events of the anime and anything that happened before the events therein. Initially I just figured we'd get more members who'd only watched the anime and hadn't read the novels, but since that's already been proven incorrect I might open it up for a vote or something. However, since we take place in a different location (so as to not directly involve the original Fate cast), the impact of which route of the story we follow is minimal.

I'm fine with allowing exceptions and minor rewrites to the events following the fourth Heaven's Feel since Fate/hollow would doubtlessly be somewhat different if it continued after Saber's route instead of Sakura's. So yes, semi-canon is accurate and intended. And a bit long-winded when I go to explain it. Embarassed

And don't worry too much about how practiced you are. Personally, this is my first serious attempt at roleplaying in the past two years.

Yay! One of the awesome writers from my Fate/Stay RP recruitment messages responded! It's awesome to see you, Cruithne, and we hope you enjoy your stay at Fate/Corrupted Equanimity. =)

Currently we have classes Lancer and Berserker remaining. Your last servant in Blood of the Holy Grail was Berserker, right? It's possible to repeat Servant classes, but we'd prefer to fill up all the available slots before that happens. Right now we don't have too advanced a system due to our focus on narration, but it's possible to step things up a notch if enough people agree to it. (See the Nasuverse RPG sticky for a snazzy rulebook!) Either way, things will certainly become a lot more interesting if you choose to participate. Wink

Re: Greetings

Post  Cruithne on Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:33 pm

Well, I don't mind filling any kind of slot, but it's rather playing canon or semi-canon that makes me reluctant to be honest. My last game was only familiar with premise (Holy Grail + Masters/Servants) and was an entirely new Holy War, not to be mistaken with the Fate story itself.

I prefer going into stories that take similar routes, but changing major things like settings and using completely original characters, not related to the original story at all.

I wont say that playing canon is bad, because I think it's a good way to start, but having roleplayed for a long time, I don't know if it's just an attitude thing, but I have a slight distaste for writing characters that already exist and have been created by someone else. Not to mention they've been copyrighted.

Ehhh...? Nobody is using a preexisting character that I've seen so far o.o and we are in a different city... Aside from one lineage and a mention of a name I haven't seen anything from previous nasuverse material that would make this seem canon.

I think I see what you're getting at, Cruithne. Right now we don't have any characters directly pertinent to the actual anime series - they're all completely original, as I believe you've observed. Yet the world setting is still in Nasu Kinoko's fictional realm, so this RP comes bundled with the same affiliations and histories, broad as they might be. As a result our characters still have ties to the original series. They are rather loosely connected, so I'm not sure how this will affect your response. Regardless of whether you choose to join or not, though, we appreciate your dropping by!

You mean that histories and backgrounds pertain merely to the setting itself?

Exactly. ^^

For example, our characters still have the obvious affiliations with Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime - most notably the Mages' Association and the Catholic Church. We have one or two individuals related to the true characters, due to the reasoning that participants in the Grail War should be connected in some way, but we haven't created any direct portrayals of or interactions with the true Fate/Stay characters. We don't intend to either - or if we ever do, we'll probably keep the meetings as a minimum plot requirement with NPCs. As a result, there has been zero character recycling so far.

Re: Greetings

Post  Akeii on Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:59 pm

Well, that's something we're working on right now. xD

I think that's a question you should pose for Ferios. I made a query earlier on about the exact systems we'd be applying, but as far as it goes for the present, it seems that we're making it more narrative-driven than anything else. There is a Fate/Stay system available for us to resort to should we ever choose to add the feature, but we haven't seen the need to do so thus far. I've made my own equipment/spell lists in rather extended detail, but it seems that we're keeping things to ourselves for the moment. And I respect the other community members - I think we're mature enough to make sufficient amends for each other without any character gaining too much power. Should this change, though, we do have the backup to create a working system.

If we ever end up using the system, our equipment and spells will end up being a lot like the ones in Fate/Stay and Tsukihime. There's a wide range of what that can be, however. In terms of originality, we're not going to be spamming Nine Lives Blade Works or Excalibur, because our characters have original Noble Phantasms as well.

Of course, you seem to have a lot more experience here than most of us, so we'd also appreciate your input in this area. Should you choose to join, we'd be more than happy to learn from the way you do things!

Hmm, I'm not really sure how to put a battle post in the form of a narrative without going to all means to really just make it a part of my writing as everything else. It's a very hard thing to do if you are still kind of newish to the idea. So I can understand. I would really hate to present an idea and make you all go with it if you weren't comfortable with it.

Are you able to give me an example of the kinds of things you wanted to use in substitution for the fighting bits? Usually my kind of battle writing is the same kind of thing you would have experienced playing the VN.

Would it be more or less an "implied" win or loss with the battle parts skipped out?

Re: Greetings

Post  Akeii on Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:23 pm

The way things are going, I think we'll probably have use the implied system unless Ferios plans to make this turn-based. He seems a bit reluctant to act as arbiter, which is understandable, because I wouldn't want to run an RP either while knowing everything about to happen. We have a fairly active chatbox, though, so it's possible that we can settle things out before actually posting. I'd imagine we'd post individually our characters' actions during a battle until its resolution.

Which brings me to the chronology of the RP. Since we appear virtually every day, it's possible to wait for characters currently involved in some event to finish without any interruptions before moving on. It seems that this has become a general rule to maintain the coherency of the RP at large. So, I believe that this would improve narrations by a large margin, even for battles. I would like to know your opinions on this as well, of course.

Re: Greetings

Post  Ferios on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:36 pm

Apologies for not being here to answer myself, but everything Akeii has stated so far is both true and explained a lot better than I could have done.

I've really been rather vague about this before, so this explanation is probably well overdue. I hadn't intended to skip any battle parts, but fighting should be kept as narrative as the rest of the roleplaying. Combat akin to what is seen in the novel is acceptable, the more detailed the better. If you want, I can type up a few examples of what I'm thinking.

For posting, there are two ways to do it. The first is to do a series of short posts, back and fourth, until the battle ends. As Akeii mentioned, everyone would wait for the characters involved to finish before we move on. The drawback with this choice is the wait time for characters that are uninvolved. However, it allows for the fight to be interrupted or joined by those uninvolved characters. Of course, too many characters in one battle leads to a large brawl that would be difficult to follow, so all things in moderation.

The second is to talk to the player you're fighting with in another chat medium and work the entire battle out with them so that one of you can post the whole thing all at once. PMs are a solid choice for this, if a bit slow. Instant messengers would be a bit better, and something like IRC would be optimal. If need be, I can set the actual forum chatbox (as opposed to the shoutbox) back up just for combat. The issues with this choice are that the outcome is decided when it's posted, so there's no chance for third-party interruption, and that (for now) you have to come up with your own chat medium.

Keep in mind that the first few combat scenes will be considered a trial run. If it doesn't seem to be working out, we can switch to a turn system or find another way to go about it. This is my first time running an RP as well as the first time I've ever really used forums for roleplaying, so if you have any suggestions for improvement, I'd love to hear them. I can't promise they'll get used, but I'd consider them nonetheless. Wink

Thanks for all the clarification guys! I really appreciate it. I thought I'd just reply for one last time though. Just tonight, something really concerning has just come up in my personal life, so I unfortunately have to dedicate all my time to that. So it looks like RP's going back on the shelf for another year.

'Tis an unfortunate thing, but if I get time I shall go through and bookmark this site and keep it in mind.

Good luck to you all.

Post  Nagare on Tue Sep 27, 2011 2:57 pm

Hello there! My name is Radek, nice to meet you \o.

As in my native language there aren't any (even bad or worthless) FSN-like play-by-forums I considered joining any english game for a longer while. I wasn't sure of my language skill - if it allow me to play without feeling this uneasiness while writing posts and trying to not fall behind other players in this aspect of game. I played seven or eight other roleplays in my native language (which is polish btw) and I always had fun but never ever I stayed in any for a longer time (main reason was abandoning forum by its admins so it wasn't exactly my fault). I was yearning for any FSN RP but nobody seems to have will to play in that universe in Poland (there was once a forum about FSN where were a lot of players and they seem to enjoyed playing there, but it fell long time ago).

Yeah, so why am I here? Well, I spot a link on other website leading to this site. Then I talked a little with Ferios and as he said that you maybe won't bash me a lot about my writing I thought that maybe I'll try playing here and see how would it develop. I might be concerned about my style a lot because I'd hate to be the guy who spoil the fun in this kind of game so if get accepted here - please tell me about anything I'd done wrong, I'll appreciate it.

And if that happens tbh I'll be playing this kind of game for the very first time. I had played a lot RP, as I said, but on every one of them there was a lot of subforums which was a specified places in game, we had gamemasters who were leading game and its plot so I might need a little time to get accustomed to playing here - forgive me for that too.

And... That would be it for the time being. I heard that for a current moment game is pretty much stopped because of lack of players? Any plans of reviving it soon? Or can I help with anything?
